About Us
A Family Project Dedicated to Bairrada and Its Traditions.
Located in the village of Poutena, in Bairrada, Vadio is a family project founded in 2005 by Luís Patrão and Eduarda Dias. Our focus is to recover traditional grape varieties and produce DOC Bairrada wines that respect the authenticity of the region.
Throughout the Vale D. Pedro, we cultivate thirteen vineyards totaling 10 hectares, carefully divided into 27 distinct plots. It is from this diversity that the essence of our wines is born: a classic style, faithful to the region’s authenticity and to the genuine character of the grape varieties that bring them to life.
The winery is housed in an old warehouse in the center of the village—a space that reflects the simplicity and respect for tradition that guide our work. Here, every detail is handled with care and patience, in an artisanal process where time is our greatest ally.
A Family, a Project, a Passion
Vadio is the project of the couple Luís Patrão and Eduarda Dias. A native of Bairrada, Luís divides his time between Vadio and Tapada de Coelheiros, where he is the head winemaker. He previously worked for 13 years at Herdade do Esporão. Eduarda is Brazilian from Pernambuco and the granddaughter of a Beirão from Lafões. She has lived in Portugal since 2007 and manages the daily operations of the small family business.
Luís’s father, Mr. Dinis Patrão, leads the viticulture. In the past, he sold agricultural products to small farmers and today he is the biggest enthusiast of regenerative farming. He often says: "A day without visiting the vineyard is not a good day."
The team also includes viticulture consultant Hugo Melo, Luís’s childhood friend, and Filipe Abreu and Cristina Ferreira, who skillfully manage the work in the vineyards and winery.
Baga
More Than a Grape.
An Identity.
Baga is the predominant red grape variety in Bairrada. It is a vigorous variety, with small bunches and late ripening. In clay soils with good sun exposure, Baga can ripen well and produce delicately colored wines that can age in the bottle for many years.
We are deeply passionate about Baga and strongly believe in the potential of this unique variety. Its versatility is remarkable: it can produce very different styles, from sparkling wines with great acidity and delicate texture to reds that range from light to full-bodied and structured.
Light on the outside.
Authentic on the inside.
Since 2016, we have adopted a conscious sustainability policy that also extends to the weight of our bottles. All our still wine bottles now weigh just 360 grams — a significant reduction compared to what was previously standard. We recognise that today one of the greatest contributors to the wine industry’s carbon footprint is glass, and we take this responsibility seriously.
For our sparkling wines, we use 800-gram bottles, which are currently the lightest available for this category. This is a subject we value deeply and one that is also championed by people and organisations we greatly admire, such as critic Jancis Robinson and The Wine Society, a valued client and benchmark in the sector. For us, speaking about bottle lightness is essential, as it is an integral part of Vadio’s commitment to sustainability and to reducing its environmental footprint.
